Rwanda Art Museum is the country’s sole museum of contemporary art and displays artworks produced by both Rwandan and international artists. Opened in 2006 as National Art Gallery, it was housed inside what was meant to be King Mutara III Rudahigwa's new palace. The first acquisitions of contemporary art date from before the founding of the National Art Gallery. They included donations and purchases from local artists including acquisitions via competitions, workshops and festivals, with important works by artists from various countries in Africa. These contests took place within the framework of the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. Each contest had a specific theme, linked to Rwanda’s recent history. In other words, the museum collected art that mirrors the society in which healing, reconciliation, tolerance and peace are the main points of interest. In May 2018, the National Art Gallery moved from Nyanza to the former Presidential Palace Museum in Kigali and got rebranded as the Rwanda Art Museum with its permanent exhibition “Art for Peace '', with more than 120 works of around 60 artists. In addition, the visitors can visit the flight debris from the FALCON 50’s presidential jet that went down on 6th April 1994.
