Formally, the layout of the back is identical to the front cover: one center mandrola
surrounded by four medallions in a cross layout with four figures in each corner. In another
mandrola, the Virgin Mary sits on a heavenly rainbow throne with the baby Jesus, evoking the
image of the grown Jesus on the front.
Instead of the apostles, there are the heads of four female figures, who could be the
allegorical personifications of the four cardinal virtues.
Instead of the angels, these corners on the back cover are populated by images of four
prophets who had prophesized the perpetual virginity of Mary and the coming of Christ as the
Messiah: Aaron, with the blooming staff in the upper right; Isaiah; Ezekiel, with the closed door
in the form of a gate tower; and finally Solomon with his sealed well.
