Sacred Tree

The aalamaram (banyan tree). Ravi Varma's mother Umayamba Bayi was possessed by a spirit from a similar tree. Though the old tree has withered and died, the current one in its place is worshipped. They also perform upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony) and last rites for the tree, as they would for a human.
