Born in 1947 to a British father and Nigerian mother, Dale moved to the United Kingdom at the age of two to live with an aunt. Nearly two decades later, he returned to Nigeria to finish his Secondary education at St. Gregory's college, Lagos. While he was in secondary school, he met Bruce Onobrakpeya who encouraged him to pursue a career in art.
Following in the steps of his mentor (Bruce Onobrakpeya), many of his early works were done in Linographs and foil. Safe Journey depicts an overloaded truck with passengers and luggage. This is the typical way people travel in some developing countries.
