This piece is by SUMIKAWA Kiichi, a Japanese sculptor known for his ongoing abstract sculptural series Sori no aru Katachi (Yielding Forms). Remarking on this particular piece, he said, “I imagined a sail filled with wind — the polished, sharp edges of the granite contrasting with the powerful, natural, rough stone. I wanted to lend an element of movement to the quiet atmosphere of this courtyard.” Sumikawa is also known for his involvement in works designed for public spaces, including supervising the design of the Tokyo Skytree.
