Saint James Moorslayer

Attributed to Domingo A. de Uzal due to its resemblance to the portrait he painted of the Archbishop Francisco Blanco, though some scholars suggest it may instead belong to his master, García de Bouzas, or another of his pupils, Manuel Arias Varela.
The painting depicts the apparition of St. James at the Battle of Clavijo, when he came to the aid of King Ramiro I’s troops in their fight against the Saracens, a battle believed to have taken place in the year 859. The Apostle is shown dressed as a pilgrim, draped in a flowing red cloak, riding a white horse. In his right hand, he holds the banner of the Order of St. James, while with his right he strikes down the fleeing enemy beneath his horse with a sword.
During restoration work in 2001, a previous painting was discovered beneath the surface layer, depicting Cardinal Gil Álvarez de Albornoz on horseback in the midst of battle.
