The panel has been exhibited at the Milan Duomo Museum since 1974. The subject represented is Saint John the Apostle intent on writing the Book of Revelation on the island of Patmos. The work is attributed to Cristoforo and Agostino de Mottis, however this should be taken with caution. In all likelihood, the panel was conceived for the stained-glass window dedicated to Saint John the Apostle on the southern side of the Duomo, a large window financed by the Milanese Notary Corporation who wanted to pay homage to their patron saint.
