Painted around 1602 for the Mattei family, the work seems revolutionary for two reasons. First, the saint is represented in a new pose (altough it was inspired by Michelangelo's Ignudi on the Sistine Chapel). Second, the use of chiaroscuro (light and dark effects) makes the figure powerfully emerge from an indistinct background
