Located on the Bolivian Plateau, the Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt desert in the world. Covering an area of over 12 000 square kilometres, it is perched at 3600 metres of altitude. The harvesting of salt is a demanding job performed by some mining families. Vast lithium reserves are hidden in this white gold and are mined to be utilised in the production of lithium batteries.
