Salzburg Missal

The missal, comprising a total of five volumes (here volume 3), for the high masses of the cathedral of Salzburg counts among the most splendid and elaborate missals of the Middle Ages. It was produced during the terms in office of three prince archbishops from around 1466 to around 1489/94. All illustrations are reproduced and explained in a monograph published in 2011 (Das Salzburger Missale, Luzern: Quaternio).
Fol. 60v: The "tree of death and of life" painted by Berthold Furtmeyr between 1482 and 1489: Eva hands the apples from the tree of paradise bringing sin and death to the representatives of the old covenant. On the other side, Mary picks hosts, the bread of life, from the same tree, which she hands to the faithful. At the top two prophets indicate the topic, at the bottom the Good Shepherd is represented in three scenes.
