A group of Sami men and women gathered by the fire inside a big tent. There is also a reindeer inside the tent.

Biard was a French painter who traveled with different expeditions to exotic locations like the Northern Scandinavia and Svalbard, and also the Amazon. He often painted dramatic scenes from these expeditions and used his imagination to make the paintings seem more exotic. The tent in this picture is a summer tent, which would not be ideal in the winter, and reindeer was generally not brought inside the tents
