(Nighttime) "Khong Arch" is an architectural element associated with faith, which serves as a gateway in the boundary that separates an area of chaos from one of peace.
"Paifang" comes from the name of an ancient Chinese administrative region. "Fang" was the boundary that surrounded the region, marked by a tightly guarded wall. Its subdivision was called "Pai." Nowadays, "paifang" is used to call the entrance arch form built according to Chinese beliefs.
Both the khong arch and paifang come from different beliefs of Thai and Chinese people, but with similar features and applications. These are thought to be based on the exchange and dissemination of cultures through the Silk Road. The resulting cultural traces have been passed down and incorporated into works found in Thai society, where some of the population is of Chinese descent.
Artistic and architectural styles are passed down through culture, branching out and developing in relation to society. The khong arch and paifang are examples of cultural elements where separation and re-assimilation occur, influenced by people’s migration and adjustments.
"Samyan Heaven Gate" is an art project that represents the concept of cultural integration in order to highlight and create an understanding of history through cultural narratives.
