The San Fernando Market was opened in 1944 and is known for being the Municipal Market of Lavapiés. The frontage of the building is its most original element and gives this market a unique character among all those in Madrid, manifested in the surprise of the visitor when they discover that behind the magnificent frontage there is a municipal market. In addition to the traditional fresh food offering that characterises municipal markets, there is a wide variety of shops ranging from fashion stores to bookstores, as well as offering various cultural and leisure activities.
