Phansi Museum
Berea, South Africa

A selection of objects used by many southern African traditional healers (Sangomas / Inyangas) for bone throwing rituals. In these rituals, bones, animal vertebrae and other objects including dominos or similar objects, cowrie shells, dice, stones or money are thrown out by a Sangoma who then ‘reads’ them. Different groupings of objects and their positioning have different meanings.
