Part of a series of sketches in Sarah Hutchinson's scrap book. circa 1851-1865. According to notes given to us by Sally Hall, Dove Cottage Guide: 'Lord Cadogan purchased Moss Head from Mr. Fleming Green in 1872 and had it rebuilt as a Summer residence but both Lady Cadogan and himself died within the first six months of the next year, and the property was taken back by Mr. Green, who obtained a licence and opened it as the Rothay Hotel in 1874.' and Moss Head was originally in the corner of what is now Rothay Hotel garden. It was quite a large house and very near the road. The door which still exists in the wall near the Gingerbread shop was a garden entrance. Opposite in what is now a portion of Church Stile garden stood stocks in the time of Robert Newton being landlord there. It was said that people sitting in the inn could see the stocks outside. Moss Head was pulled down and The Rothay built; Lord Cadogan lived there but only for a short time.
