At the heart of the 1960s, while Gilardi conceived 'Tappeto-Natura,' art was manifesting a revolution. Not thought of as a simple painting on the wall anymore, art became something to experiment with, something with which one could relate to every day. Anticipating the 1968 slogan “All Power to the Imagination,” art entered the reality of each individual in order to transform itself in emotion and experience.
Gilardi offered an important contribution in this direction. The material used in his works is polyurethane foam—an artificial material, nevertheless soft, light, and comfortable.
A material that stimulates a sensation in those who relate to the artwork and "immerse themselves" in the nature proposed by Gilardi and become part of it. To see but also to touch, to weigh, to sit on, to relax and to express oneself as if they were truly in nature. To emphasize and make this idea of art accessible, Gilardi produced the multiple "Sassi" with the Gufram company in 1968. It is still in production today.
