Deep red is one of the special colors found in Edo period Satsuma glass. The geometric design on the base resembles snowflakes, a style of cutting that was originally popular in English and Irish glass. The gradation from clear glass at the cut to red in the body of the glass is a special characteristic of Japanese cut glass.
