Fukuoka-ken, Japan

This is a scabbard for chiisagatana (a short sword and the only sword that feudal lords were permitted to wear at the Shogun’s court). It is decorated in many styles of the Tachibana family crest in high-relief maki-e design. Each crest was individually used by the successor in the Edo period (1600-1868). They are shown all together on this scabbard. It is evident that this work was created after the mid-Edo period.
