The scaletta d'acqua (water staircase) and vasca (pond) were originally designed by Rose Standish Nichols in 1925, who was inspired by similar features found at the Villa Cicogna in Italy. After falling into disrepair in the 1990s, the entire garden was reimagined by landscape architect Dennis Buettner and reopened to the public in 2002. The garden's original features, many of which were salvaged and restored, are still part of the current garden design.
