Scoresheet of Game 6 of the 1981 World Championship Match in Merano, Italy, handwritten by Anatoly Karpov. This was Viktor Korchnoi’s first win in this match which finished 6-2 in Anatoly Karpov’s favor. The scoresheet includes the note addressed by Karpov to the chief arbiter of the match, Paul Klein: “Respectful Mr. Klein, I resign the 6th game of the match.”

Each player had two and a half hours to make 40 moves after which the game could be adjourned and resumed the next day. The 30-year-old World Champion did not arrive at the continuation of the game, instead sending the signed resignation note an hour before play was to resume.
