Yi Sang-jeok (1803-1865/pen-name: Useon) served as an official Korean-Chinese interpreter, and was a disciple of Kim Jeong-hui (pen-name: Chusa), a well-known calligrapher. He visited China on twelve occasions, which gave him ample opportunity to form close friendships with scholars of the Qing Dynasty of China. He once took Sehando (The Picture of Winter Scene) by Kim Jeong-hui with him to Beijing and returned with critical comments on the work made by sixteen Chinese scholars.
