Land art was born as a protest against the commercialization of art. In this regard, it follows the ideas of the avant-garde. Landscape is the exhibition hall and the created artworks belong to all who pass by. This is how Kristek’s Sea Horse (1986) was made on the Italian coast near Roma (Chivitavecchia). Lubo Kristek is also fascinated by the play with coincidence. Into his assemblages, he incorporates objects and materials found around the place. He draws from the genius loci, the spirit of the place, while simultaneously contributing to it with his artistic production. The merging of the creative process with the landscape was so inspiring for him that, with time, the idea of creating a sculptors’ pilgrimage in the landscape matured in his mind, dedicated to the river Thaya. Therefore, during the second millennium, he created the Kristek Thaya Glyptotheque.
