"As an individual in society, human beings have their sociality as their basic characteristic.
In my opinion, art has two functions: First, as an individual in society, you can express your concern about society in a way that you are familiar with and good at. Second, it is for people to taste and enjoy. I keep making sculptures of Lao Tzu, Sima Qian, Wang Yangming, Tan Sitong, Qiu Jin, Lu Xun, Fu Lei, Liang Shuming, and other historical figures because from the bottom of my heart I love them so much. Their lives turned into different tragedies, but they are all responsible figures in Chinese history and the representatives and pillars of the spirit of Chinese ancient and modern literati.
Lu Xun is one of the historical figures I keep make sculptures of. I feel that our nation needs people who are brave enough to take the responsibility and speak the truth like Lu Xun," says Tian.
