The painting features many small boats enveloped in the ‘sweet melancholy of a fluffy sky’ where the landscape is an expression of a ‘state of mind’. The painting is dedicated to Domenico Trentacoste, a painter from Palermo, and mirrors the expressive style Fragiacomo adopted in the early 20th century. He was nicknamed ‘the poet of the lagoon’ and at this point of his production the bright luminosity of his early works was now a distant memory. Here, he employed more soft colours and the dull tones of pale blue and grey.
