More Information: August Strindberg, who was always open to new forms of artistic expression, became interested in photography from the 1880s onwards.
//Among other things, he undertook a reportage trip to France in 1886, although most of his photographs from this trip were a technical failure.//
Family portraits taken during a stay in Switzerland, cloud formations and celestial bodies are examples of subjects of interest to Strindberg during various periods of his life. With the help of photographer Herman Andersson, he constructed a camera in 1906 to take 'psychological portraits' of faces in actual size. This creation, named the 'Wunder' camera, had a lens with a focal length of 30 centimetres and required about five minutes of exposure. “I do not care about my appearance, but I want people to be able to see my soul, and it is evident in these photographs better than any others,” was Strindberg's own comment on the series of images that includes this self-portrait.
