It belongs to the Cupressaceae family, which includes the largest and oldest trees on Earth. It is a pyrophilous plant; its seeds need fire to disperse and germinate. Its bark is very fibrous and can reach several tens of centimetres in thickness, and is fireproof, protecting living tissue from fire.
