Serpentine Gallery Pavilions: Annual Architectural Commissions and Public Programmes
The 2005 Pavilion was based on a simple rectangular grid that was distorted to create a dynamic curvaceous form. It comprised interlocking timber beams, a material that accentuated the relationship between the Pavilion and surrounding park. A translucent polycarbonate covering allowed light to penetrate the Pavilion. This impermeable shell stopped 1.3 metres from the ground, so the structure appeared to hover above the lawn, poised like an animal with an arched back and taut skin, ready to pounce. The structure also mirrored the scale of the Serpentine Gallery and articulated the landscape between the two buildings.
