Serpentine Gallery Pavilions: Annual Architectural Commissions and Public Programmes
The 2010 Pavilion by Jean Nouvel was a contrast of lightweight materials and dramatic cantilevered structures. The entire design was rendered in a vivid red that, in a play of opposites, contrasted with the green of its park setting. The building consisted of bold geometric forms, large retractable awnings and a sloped freestanding wall that stood 12 metres above the lawn. Striking glass, polycarbonate and fabric structures created a versatile system of interior and exterior spaces, encouraging socialising, relaxation and play.
