Setting the cloth on tenterhooks (shinshibari), Heian Period Costumes

To give the fabric buoyancy, the woven cloth is stretched out using tenterhooks (shinshi), and paste is brushed on it. This press of stretching the fabric (shinshibari) is said to have started around 1558-1600. Glutinous rice past called manori is usually used in this process.
