19th century

Museo de América

Museo de América
Madrid, Spain

Significant quantities of Asian goods from trade with the Philippines arrived in Spanish America as well as Europe. This generated a marked interest in all things from the East from the beginning of the trade route starting with the so-called Manila Galleon in 1565. The lacquered pieces, such as this one, were among the products in high demand. Dated in the 19th century, this beautiful lacquered wood sewing box has a black background decorated with different Asian scenes. There are weeping willows, schematic architecture and characters with Oriental attire. Inside there is a mirror and different compartments and accessories.
