The Shah Jahan Mosque is thought to be the first purpose-built mosque in northern Europe and Britain. It was built in 1888-9 to designs by architect William Isaac Chambers. It was commissioned by Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner, a Hungarian Jewish linguist whose ambition it was to establish an educational Oriental Institute to enhance the study of the culture and history of India and the Islamic world.

The Shah Jahan Mosque is Listed Grade I for its architectural and historical interest.
