Shield

A shield made from hippopotamus hide by a specialist. The specialist cuts the hide, carves the sticks and binds it with leather thongs at the edge. It is then buried in soil for three days until it is stiff enough. A hammer is used to beat it to shape. The shield is used for defence purposes during warfare. It was noted that this particular shield was used in 1952, when fighting against missionaries at Kabaraet who were on route to Kelowo. It is painted with white, red and blue colours as decoration.
