This sitter, Shirley Woolmer, is once again contested because of their familial background. The sitter could be Shirley Woolmer, Sr.: a successful printer, bookseller, author, creator of a Circulating Library in Exeter, and proprietor of the “Exeter and Plymouth Gazette”. However, the more likely candidate is his son, Shirley Woolmer, Jr., who was also a printer and bookseller. The younger Woolmer is more likely the subject in this sketch based on the age of the sitter and the date of the painting.
