Alice was a pioneer of the social documentary style. While her contemporaries approached photography by trying to make their pictures look like paintings, Alice embraced the art form's original style that was distinct from any other medium. In her photos of working class and immigrant New Yorkers, she highlights the dignity of their daily life and work.
