The printed label from inside the shoes that may have been worn by Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) or another member of the royal family. They were kept as mementoes by Miss Susannah Richmond, who was a member of the Royal Household, working at Marlborough House during the 1860s.
At this time, Edward VII (1841-1910) and Alexandra, as Prince and Princess of Wales, lived at Marlborough House. This residence was at the centre of their London social scene. Family events, including weddings, and the births and christenings of three of their children between 1867 and 1869 took place there.
The shoes could have belonged to Queen Alexandra or to another member of the royal family and may have been given to Susannah Richmond to thank her for for her loyal service. The pale silk satin and the large decorative rosette are very delicate, so they would probably have been intended to have been worn only indoors.
The printed label inside the shoes shows they were made by Melnotte who was based in Paris but also had a shop in London.
