Short dragonfish

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
Washington, DC, United States

This is an x-ray image of a short dragonfish along with a corresponding photograph of the specimen in identical pose. The broad, expanded pectoral fins of this small marine fish recall the wings of mythical dragons. Despite their fierce appearance, dragonfish are harmless to humans and eat only crustaceans and insects.
