Shôki, the Demon Slayer

This illustration, like many other works by Kawanabe Kyôsai, contains strong humoristic features. According to traditional knowledge, Shôki was a Chinese scholar. He committed suicide after being denied the earned first place in his exams due to his immense ugliness. After his death, he became a demon vanquishing ghost. In this scene, he is hunting a devil that has hidden in a carp banner.
