New York, United States

Silver millares imitating an Almohad dirham, 12th century. Because Europe mined more silver whereas Africa produced more gold, silver was more highly valued in North Africa than it was in Europe. In the 12th century, European mints produced many imitations of anonymous square Islamic dirhams specifically for export to North Africa (ANS 0000.999.17133).
