Jan Dobkowski's Simultaneous pictures I is the first one in a larger series entitled Simultaneous pictures, realised by the artist in 1995–1996. The canvas is divided into four distinct pieces (each with a size of 48 x 64 cm) by a vertical and a horizontal axis. Each of the created parts of the work is also a separate picture. They are united by a frame composed of alternating red and blue squares. The upper-left picture presents a naked couple lying horizontally, facing each other. The characters are portrayed in a very synthetic, symbolic and simplified manner, but still with visible sexual organs. The upper-right picture shows three blue-grey flying birds. The lower-left one takes the form of a monochromatic presentation with a condensed group of figures and the motif of a hand strongly standing out in the foreground. The last one, the lower-right picture, takes the form of a colourful graphic, with a plane built by a sequence of almost parallel lines running down from right to left, within which one can discern the shapes of female figures. [P. Lisowski]
