John A. Macdonald in Ottawa, 1869. This photo was taken by William Topley at the Ottawa branch of the then famous Notman & Sons photographic studios. The background was hand-painted and a sepia wash was added at Notman’s main studio in Montreal. Photographer William Notman and his sons chronicled Canada’s coming into nationhood through photographic art.
