Sir John Franklin

This is an engraving of a portrait of Sir John Franklin by Thomas Herbert Maguire after the Swiss artist Joseph Mathias Negelen (1792-1870). The portrait is half length, showing Franklin standing with his left hand on the hilt of his sword. It was printed by M. & N. Hanhart, and this copy is endorsed with the signature of John Franklin in the bottom right hand corner.

This portrait depicts Franklin in his role as Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land (modern Tasmania) where he was Governor from 1837 to 1843.
