Records suggest that a moated manor house existed on the site of the gardens at Sissinghurst Castle in the 12th century. The surviving tower and walls of were built circa 1570 for Sir Richard Baker. Sissinghurst was bought in 1930 by the writer and gardener Vita Sackville-West and her husband Sir Harold Nicholson. In 1967 the castle, gardens and surrounding farmland were bequeathed to the National Trust.
