On visiting Eileen Skellern 1, Aimee Mullins was struck by the enclosed nature of the unit and sought to bring a sense of space and distance through her work. She designed an immersive scene for a sitting area that has all the qualities of a picturesque 19th century landscape painting. The sky expands over the ceiling and a misty horizon disappears out of sight. It is abundant with trees and plant life and is accompanied by a pine and juniper scent that can be spritzed into the space by staff. One patient said that the piece made her feel as though ‘she were sitting in the park’
