C. W. Bampfylde’s brother-in-law and friend, Edward Knight Jnr., (1734-1812) was the first man to record the landscape garden at Hestercombe in any detail, summarising its main features, inlcuding the Gothic Alcove in a small pocketbook he carried with him on his travels about the country in 1761.
