Conrad Martens was employed as ship's artist on HMS Beagle during the period in which Charles Darwin was onboard as the ship's naturalist. Martens joined the ship in Montevideo in November 1833 and was a member of the crew for two years. This sketch shows Mount Sarmiento in Tierra del Fuego, the archipelago at the southernmost tip of South America. Darwin kept extensive field notes and a journal during the voyage.
