In the 1800s, children used mini chalkboards made of slate to practice writing because paper was too expensive. Anne decided that she “cannot be perfectly happy’ with red hair, so when Gilbert taunted her at school, calling her braids “Carrots!”, she looked at him with a vengeance, sprung to her feet, and hit him over the head with her slate.
