Wu Guanzhong was born in Yixingyi, Jiangsu province. He studied under the tutelage of Pan Tianshou and Lin Fengmian at National Academy of Art from 1937 to 1942. From 1943 to 1946, he took up a teaching post at National Chongqing University. In 1946, Wu went to study oil painting in France where he was taught by Professor Jean-Marc Souverbie at National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France ( École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris ). He returned to China in 1950 and taught successively at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University, and Beijing Art Normal School successively. He was elected as a member of the Executive Council of China Artists Association in 1979, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in 1985, and member of the Standing Committee of CPPCC in 1994. A year later when China Oil Painting Society was established in Beijing, he was elected as the honorary president.
