Jolly painted this canvas in winter 1906 while staying at the Hotel Terminus (now Les Mimosas) in Pont-Aven harbour. He depicts a snow-covered Pont-Aven, a sight whose unpredictable and ephemeral qualities never failed to charm him. A row of poplars follows the course of the River Aven further upstream, and the blue-white tints of the snow contrast with the bright orange of the trees’ winter foliage. Jolly’s Impressionist touch recalls the style of his friend Henry Moret, but the forms in this work are more strongly outlined with distinct blue lines.
