The sun is setting while the moon is rising. In the twilight, the vermilion buildings of the Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa appear and disappear in the snowscape.
During this time, there used to be the Yanagawa domain’s suburban residence near the temple. As the signature of the painting says, “依命 (By order), 真写雪堤 (painted by Settei)”; this painting may have been created by Hasegawa Settei (1813-82) on commission from the lord of the Yanagawa domain. Settei was good at landscape painting. This tranquil and visionary painting represents Settei’s style of work very well.
