Lovell Birge Harrison was born in Philadelphia in 1854.

Harrison first studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, before traveling to Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

When he returned to the U.S., Harrison became the first director of the Art Students League’s school for landscape painting in Woodstock, NY.

Known for his poetic depictions of winter landscapes, Harrison preferred painting the wintry scenes of the northern states and Canada. His style utilized subdued colors to express the effects of light on landscapes of snow and ice.
